What is athletes foot?
Athlete’s foot is a common fungal infection of the skin. It thrives in moist, warm areas of skin such as that between the toes.
How do we catch athletes foot?
Athlete’s foot can be transferred to other people by walking barefoot in communal showers and changing areas, or even by sharing a towel or shoes with someone who has the infection. It can spread to other parts of the body, but the most common area of spread, is to the toenails.
What are the symptoms of athletes foot?
Sore itchy skin, especially between the toes. The skin may turn white and small blisters may form. Cracks may appear and the skin may start to peel. It may appear as a dry, scaly rash on the sides of the foot. (This type of fungal infection is sometimes called ‘moccasin foot’) one or both feet may be affected.
How can we avoid athletes foot?
- Washing feet daily and drying thoroughly, especially between the toes
- Spplying an astringent, such as Surgical Spirit, between the toesC
- Choosing socks and socks and shoes made from natural materials
- Changing socks/tights daily
- Alternating footwear if possible
