Blackpool played host to LSCft’s annual Time to Shine awards last week as colleagues, service users, partners and sponsors descended on the town’s iconic Winter Gardens for a night of celebration to mark the outstanding work carried out by the Trust over the last 12 months.

This year, 12 awards were up for grabs at the winter wonderland themed ceremony which took place on 14 November in a spectacular event hosted by our Chief Executive, Chris Oliver and the BBC’s Deputy Managing Editor, Nazia Mogra.

Guests were treated to a packed programme of entertainment including dancers, a magician and live music. Following a public vote, the teams at our Ormskirk units collected the People’s Choice Award as colleagues in the room listened to a harrowing story of how valued healthcare support worker Tracey Green arrived at work as usual at our Scarisbrick Inpatient Unit in Ormskirk, but was later found slumped and unconscious by a colleague who raised the alarm. She was having a heart attack.

Members of her team, as well as those working nearby commenced CPR and contacted the emergency services.

Performing CPR on a friend and colleague was emotionally challenging. As the team around her battled with their concerns, they were able to work together to give her the emergency response that she needed, as well as managing their busy ward, and distressed patients.

Due to the quick action and clinical skills from Tracey’s colleagues, Tracey received the care and treatment she required in a timely manner. This swift action meant that not only did Tracey survive, the team also prevented the deterioration of her vital organs.

Matron Victoria Briggs said:

“Tracey and her family would like to thank all those involved in saving her life. I am so proud of all the team involved, Preethi Sujith, Phil Bailey, Regan Stockley, Lian Edington-Lyon, Rachel Fairhurst, Garry Green, Jo Hamer, Adam Murray, Colin Pennington and Beth Hollinrake. They supported each other and the caring and compassionate response they showed that day is typical of all the colleagues at Scarisbrick.”

Tracey was able to join her life-saving colleagues at the awards and said:

 "I can't thank them enough!"

The Improvement and Innovation category was awarded to our pain-free blood sampling partnership project. It’s delivered by our learning disability teams in Morecambe Bay to help reduce health inequalities. A special device trialled with patients means blood can now be taken painlessly and is due to be rolled out among our learning disability teams across Lancashire and South Cumbria.

The Service User and Carer Award was given to Nurse Michelle Hawkins who has worked with dementia patients and their families for almost 20 years at The Harbour in Blackpool.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chris Oliver said:

“It was an absolute pleasure to be part of a celebration which allows us to recognise, reward and say a huge thank you to our wonderful NHS colleagues who work across the whole of Lancashire and South Cumbria for our Trust.

Congratulations to each of the winners and all of the nominees representing the finest of our colleagues and teams but also a huge thank you to all of the judges, who included some of our service users, as it was no easy task picking from the fantastic entries we received. It was a great night and was great to give something back to our LSCft family.”
