The new five days of intensive face to face induction training was delivered to our new internationally educated nurses (IEN) for the first time last week.

Facilitated and delivered by Professional Development Lead for Inclusion, Nurse Shingai Musuka, to 23 IEN’s in conjunction with clinical educators and preceptorship leads, feedback revealed the intensive training really supported IENs to adapt to the nursing practices here at LSCft.

Following the success of the first five day course which was co-produced with IENs, all future IENs will undertake the full five day course.

It covers the following nursing and Trust practices:

  • Mental health conditions
  • Learning styles and networking
  • Professional development
  • Preceptorship process
  • Documentation and nursing notes
  • Shift co-ordination
  • Mental state examination
  • Admission
  • Cultural competence
  • Therapeutic observations
  • Seclusion
  • De-escalation
  • Community service routes
  • Care planning and risk assessment
  • Freedom to Speak Up
  • Safe care and IRIS

“It was motivating and yet emotional to hear some of the personal feedback from our internationally educated nurses and we’re looking forward to planning the next induction for our IENs for the week beginning 16 December. It’s nice to give them a sound introduction to working at the Trust and going forward all our IEN’s will get the five day face to face induction to help educate them and welcome them to working here at LSCft.”
