Our Cyber Security Team has been announced winners of the Effective Information Sharing and Security Award at the iNetwork Innovation Awards.

The Team’s project, zED to the Max, builds on the original zED email scanner created by security researcher Bruce Thomson, aKa 1UglyCrazyRobot, to increase safety and security when sending and receiving emails.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and NHS England (NHSE) have guidance and certification to configure email domain security which includes anti-spoofing technologies, zED to the MAx helps us all understand which email domains we send to or receive from are in line with that guidance.

This helps stop scams which can be incredibly costly to the NHS and risk the confidentiality of sensitive information and data. When we can trust the integrity of our partners and suppliers’ email in the supply chain, we are all in a safer place.

zED to the Max can easily be applied to Outlook as a quick-to-use button. This new button allows colleagues to know which email addresses are trustworthy and safe to send to. Up-to-date information can also be obtained through the email recipient safety checker, a webpage available on the Trust’s shared network.

Cyber Security Manager for the Trust, Alan Boardman said:

“Cyber security is a top priority for the NHS. Our colleagues send and receive emails everyday so it’s vital that we keep them, our Trust and protected data safe. This new tool allows email users to check the safety and authenticity of email addresses at the click of a button.

Email security information is also stored on a dashboard which can be analysed to determine which of our partners need help to achieve NCSC email security standards.”

Alan and his colleagues, Chad Gray and Chris Baker, have worked together to create this revolutionary tool which is having an impact beyond LSCft. Other public sector organisations including Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay, NHS Informatics Merseyside, Tameside Council, West Suffolk Council and, Tower Hamlets Council have also rolled out zEd to the Max to improve their cyber security.

A well-deserved win for a team who work hard in the background to keep the Trust safe online.
